A YOUNGSTERS variety show organised by an Ashford hairdresser was a huge success when it took place on Saturday.

Numerous youth acts from all over Spelthorne entertained the borough's elderly at the Ashford Community Centre in Woodthorpe Road on July 10.

Ashford author writes history book

AN Ashford author will be at Waterstones in Staines on Saturday signing his new book.
Alan Gallop a part time teacher, of Ashford Crescent, has previously written five history books.

His new text Victoria's Children of the Dark is about the role of children and women toiling in Britain's coal mines in the Victorian era.

Shed fire in Ashford

A shed mysteriously caught fire this week to the confusion of the owners.

Fire engines from Staines were called to the address in Hensworth Road at about 3am on Tuesday July 6.

No one was injured and the fire was extinguished quickly.

WITH unemployment still high, and people on benefits under pressure to take more active steps to find work, Spelthorne Citizens Advice Bureau has warned residents to take care with training courses promising marketable qualifications or even a job on completion.

New figures show that Citizens Advice Bureaux nationwide saw problems with training courses shoot up by 49% in 2009 compared with 2008. In the last three months of the year they leapt by two-thirds (66%) compared with the same period the previous year.

EVIDENCE of civilisation that dates back to 3000BC has been found during an excavation of a street in Ashford.
