Battle to save old Brooklands building lost

Posted by Ed Saunt on Jul 24, 08 09:49 AM in Local Authority

Brooklands-college.jpgThe battle to save the historic Brooklands College building in Church Road, Ashford has been lost after councillors agreed to have it bulldozed.

Spelthorne Council's planning committee approved the college's application to build a new state-of-the-art building on the site of the doomed 1911 former Ashford Grammar School.

The controversial decision had been deferred from June's planning meeting when councillors could not agree but they voted 8-5 in favour of the plans on Wednesday July 23.

We'd like to hear from you.

Good work councillors in getting one of the last builings of any character or history erased from an already culturally barren dump of a high street.

I've only recently learned of the fate of the former County School Ashford, which I and members of my family attended before it became a 6th form college. I am appalled at what seems an extraordinary decision, (made either by commission, or ommission) to lose this significant building. I agree that the site is a hotch potch of buildings, and certainly was over 30 years ago. Why cannot it for instance, manage the problem as Godalming College has done so well, by retaining the main building, and developing state of the art facilities alongside.

I have fond memories of this historic building from the seventies, before Ashford Grammar became a sixth form college. I agree the main building should be refurbished and all the outbuildings replaced by modern training and conference rooms.
Anyone wishing to get in touch with me from that time? Marie Gammon, Beverley Heitman, etc... I'm now in Suffolk
