Ashford Hospital flats plan hits buffers

Posted by Ed Saunt on Sep 3, 08 03:16 PM in Local Authority

The controversial 170-flat development on the site of Ashford Hospital has hit the buffers after the housebuilder withdrew its planning application.

Inland Homes Ltd had been granted planning permission to bulldoze the former West Wing of the hospital and build on the site but wrote to Spelthorne Council this week announcing its intention to to pull out of the development.

The housebuilder, who bought the site from the Ashford & St Peter's NHS trust, did not give a reason for ceasing the development of 52 one-bedroom, 114 two-bedroom and four three-bedroom flats.

Cllr Ian Beardsmore described the proposed building as 'the ghetto of the future' when it was put forward for planning permission because he felt it represented overdevelopment of the site.

He said: "I don't know why it has been withdrawn but I am glad it has. I am not opposed to the site being developed but it was the density I had a real problem with."
