85 year old woman gets disabled bay wish
An 85-year-old woman had her wish for a disabled bay outside her home granted after an obdurate councillor moved his car just hours after being exposed in the Herald & News.
Cllr Kevin Flurry had refused to move his blue Rover from outside Celia Poole's Woodthorpe Road home to allow her to have the bay painted to help her with weekly chores and trips to the hospital.
And despite being unmoved by visits from police, Cllr Flurry finally backed down last Wednesday after his 'heartless' stance was revealed in the Herald & News.
Mrs Poole, who said the episode had made her want to move away after 40 years in the road, was relieved that the ordeal was over. She added: "We had lots of people supporting me when it was in the paper - two people even rang up to offer to move it themselves if he didn't.
"It will be so helpful to have the space and I am hoping we can get it painted soon."
Surrey County Council involved police after contractors had visited the site but been unable to paint the parking bay and Mrs Poole now hopes they will return to paint it in the next week.
Cllr Flurry denied he was refusing to move his car and said he merely wanted to check - in his capacity as a councillor - whether the application for the bay was legitimate. But within 24 hours of being contacted by the Herald & News last week, he had moved his car.
Although Mrs Poole does not drive herself, daughter Celia Hill visits her daily to take her out and she is struggles to walk more than a few feet when there is no parking space outside.
Mrs Hill said: "You wouldn't believe what a difference it will make when its done - it's getting more and more difficult now. The number of people who have stopped me in the street or rang me to lend their support is unbelievable. They couldn't believe what was happening."
