Hamish Miller, from Ashford, who suffered from bipolar disorder and had been depressed for about 10 years before his death on May 14, leapt from the platform and into the path of a freight train, according to two witness statements read out to Woking Coroner's Court.

In a statement read out to the court, witness Carly Rae Norris said she was waiting for a train at the station at about 2.45pm and saw Mr Miller as he "turned to face the train and stepped into its path".

His wife, Christine, was too upset to attend the inquest, but submitted a statement to deputy coroner of Surrey, Karin Englehart, saying she last saw her husband at 1.30pm that day and that she was concerned about him at the time but did not believe him to be suicidal.

Ms Kay Lane, from British Transport Police, told the court of Mr Miller's movements at the station based on CCTV footage recovered at the time, saying he walked up platform one before there was an annoucement that a freight train was passing platform two.

He then walked back, crossed through the tunnel onto platform two before disappearing under the train.

She added: "I do believe Mr Miller's behaviour on the station is unusual for someone who is waiting for trains on the platform."

The court heard that Mr Miller saw his psychiatrist, Dr Burge, based at Ashford Hospital, two days before he died, who said he had been "very very depressed", and although he denied having any intent to kill himself, he did admit to having suicidal thoughts in the past. He did not leave a suicide note.

Pathologist Norman Ratcliffe conducted the post mortem on Mr Miller's body and concluded that he died from multiple injuries.

Concluding, Ms Englehart said: "It is not necessarily so that Mr Miller jumped deliberately. It's possible that he slipped, and in the circumstances, and in view of the evidence before me, I am giving an open verdict."

Verdict: Open
