Mission to find owner of 1933 medal
Michael Hall of Cycle Man bike shop in Church Road, Ashford is on a mission to reunite a 75-year-old silver cycling medal with its rightful owner.
Mr Hall, 80, says the medal was given to him two weeks ago by a man who said he found it in the street. It was awarded for second place in a 50-mile race for Ashford Wheelers cycle club in 1933.
He said: "I am not content with just keeping it here in case someone happens to mention it. Whoever has lost it will want to know and can come to me."
The solid silver medal has the name "H Douglas" engraved on its underside as the person who was presented it for having cycled 50 miles in two hours, 24 minutes and 20 seconds.
According to cycling enthusiast Eddie Menday, 86, from Feltham, who has been involved and interested in cycling events across Surrey since he was 16, the medal will be precious to the person who won it.
He said: "It represents some very hard work for a couple of hours, usually on a Sunday morning. It would have been a time trial on the open road."
Mr Menday added there was an upsurge in cycling in the 1930s because cars were too expensive to drive at that time, which meant the roads were freed up for bicycles.
He said: "We were coming out of the restrictions of the First World War, there was more employment and people wanted to get out and about, but cars were too expensive."
