Youths launch anti-knife campaign
Street-savvy youths from Spelthorne signed a petition pledging not to carry knives and presented it to Spelthorne MP, David Wilshire, at the House of Commons last week.
More than 5,000 young people signed the petition, 'Knives Wreck Lives' - organised by the Spelthorne Youth Council - which launched on October 27 and presented their pledges to their local MP on Tuesday, December 9.
Spelthorne schools played an active role in the scheme, with police officers and members of Spelthorne Youth Council visiting during assemblies to discuss knife crime with the pupils.
Green Knives Wreck Lives wristbands were given to every child that signed the pledge and can be seen on the wrists of various celebrities who have shown their support, including England cricket captain, Kevin Pieterson.
Mr Wilshire, who has written to Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to inform her of the huge support for it in Spelthorne, said he was very pleased with the response of his young constituents.
He said: "Young people in Spelthorne have shown that they understand the risk of knife crime and shown their determination to prevent it becoming a serious local problem.
"Thankfully knife crime has not reached my constituency - it is up to us to make sure it never does. That is why this campaign is so important and I am delighted that so many young people in Spelthorne have signed up."
