Little Alfie in the all clear
A young boy was the centre of attention at a carnival style theme day held to celebrate his remission from cancer.
Seven-year-old Alfie Ward, whose birthday was on Monday May 25, found he no longer had neuroblastoma, a tumorous cancer which affects the nerves, on April 28, so on Thursday May 21 Spelthorne Infant and Nursery School, in Chertsey Road, Ashford, held an event for him.
The children of the school dressed up as carnival characters, had painting and dancing sessions, and let off balloons.
Alfie's mum Shelly King, of Beard's Road, Ashford, said: "The day went really well, and Alfie was quite overwhelmed.
"One of the mum's was going who is going through chemotherapy made him a card saying she was really pleased with his news, so it was nice for Alfie's friend to see that treatment works and his mum will get better."
Alfie was first diagnosed with the disease in January 2008, and began undergoing treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Carshalton.
Shelly said: "It was the worst thing that happened to my family, and it is something you think will never happen to you. It felt like the whole world was going to crash down on us because we didn't know if the chemotherapy would work."
Alfie has been put in remission for the next four years, but still has to undergo two scans a year to see if the disease stays away.
The day was held to surprise Alfie, who has been back at school since September, after he returned from a trip to Eurodisney last Monday (18) as part of make a wish foundation, who grant wishes to children with life threatening illnesses.
And on Friday June 5 he will be travelling to Disney Land in Florida with part of the £13,000 his family raised for him while he was ill.
Shelly said: "Alfie is going to swim with dolphins, which was one of his wishes. We will probably carry on raising money for the Marsden as they were so kind to us. We made a lot of friends, and as some people come and get treatment from other countries, it would be nice to give them something like a toy to say 'you are going to get through this.'"
Headteacher of the school Pam Martin, said: "It was a lovely day and very enjoyable. All the parents have been very supportive."
