Snow affects Spelthorne schools and A&E

Posted by Mark Goode on Jan 6, 10 10:28 AM in Local Authority

Four schools in Spelthorne have been closed due to the heavy snow and hospital staff are calling for people to visit A&E only in an emergency.

The schools include Littleton Infant School, in Rectory Close, Shepperton Laleham C of E Primary School, in The Broadway, Kingscroft Junior School, in Park Avenue, Staines, and Knowle Park Infant School, in Knowle Green.

Main roads were not affected but most side roads are reportedly covered in snow.

But Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust said they have had a fortnight of intense activity in the accident centre and are calling for people to only go to A&E if there is an emergency.

Vanessa Avlontis, the trust's deputy chief nurse, said: "We are experiencing unprecedented high levels of activity in A&E and this is putting increasing pressure on our services.

"I would like to ask the public to think twice about whether a visit to A&Eis really necessary."

The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Ultrasound Department at St. Peter's Hospital (Abbey Wing) had had to cancell all its appointments, and are asking patients to call 01932 722665 to reschedule.

The Blanche Heriot Unit is also closed.

A hospital spokeswoman said operations are still a go, but said there are problems with hospital transport, so are asking patients to call beforehand to see if the vehicle can get there.
