Spelthorne kids get certificates for healthy living scheme

Youngsters aged between seven and 13 were given certificates after learning about healthy living on Thursday January 7.

Eight kids in the borough visited Spelthorne Council offices in Knowle Green to receive their MEND certificates, which stands for Mind, exercise, Nutrition...Do it.

Mayor of Spelthorne Caroline Spencer and councillor Denise Grant, cabinet member for young people and culture, dished out the awards.

Mrs Grant said: "I am extremely impressed with the determination to pursue healthier lifestyles which these young people have shown. The MEND scheme is fantastic and I'm sure that the knowledge the young people have gained will benefit them throughout their lives."

The scheme is part of a national healthy living programme for youngsters and was run by Spelthorne Council with Surrey NHS, and funded from Big Lottery.

The kids attended MEND twice a week for ten weeks and learnt about healthy eating and took part in physical activity sessions.

The project involved kids taking part in tasting evenings and visiting supermarkets where they learnt about food labelling.

Mrs Grant said: "The young people worked very hard to achieve nutrition and physical activity targets each week, gaining many health benefits and meeting new friends."
