An armed gunman strolled into the Ashford branch of Barclays Bank yesterday (28) afternoon and took 16 staff and customers hostage.

The daylight siege of the bank, in Church Road, took place at around 4pm, when a man dressed in a white boiler suit walked into the branch brandishing, what has been described as a sawn off shotgun.

Armed police descended on the scene and taped off Church Road and nearby Fordbridge Road, while they tried to negotiate with the gunman.
